With the summer coming to an end, we have wrapped up our performances for the season. Now we turn our attention to learning.
During the first week of September, we are hosting a very special guest Kristy Oshiro, who will be performing with us on Wednesday Sept 6, 2023. We are also having a taiko workshop, taught by Kristy, on Thursday Sept 7, 2023. All taiko players are welcome to join us!!
Kristy Aki Oshiro (they/them) is a queer, trans and non-binary, 4th generation Japanese Okinawan-American professional taiko artist based in Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area with over 30 years of experience. Founder and Artistic Director of the Tsubaki Ensemble, Queer Taiko, and SOKO Taiko, Creative Director of Placer Ume Taiko, and instructor of San Mateo Buddhist Temple Taiko. Kristy Aki also teaches taiko drumming classes in many cities from Nevada City to San Mateo and is available for group performances, touring, collaborations, school assemblies, residencies, workshops, private lessons, original compositions, corporate team building, rearrangement work, and artistic consultation.
The taiko performance is on Wednesday, Sept 6, at 7:00 at the TransAlta Pavilion. This venue is located in the Taylor Centre for Performing Arts on the Mount Royal University Campus. Admittance will be by donation at the door, which will be used to directly cover the artist's expenses.
